Elections Cancelled (Again!)

Land Grab

This morning, the 22nd January, we found out that, for the third time since Labour came into government, our local elections have been cancelled once again. The Conservative county council has consistently requested to cancel local elections to maintain their presence at County Hall, and, indeed, the spineless Labour government has agreed to do so.

After being joined by Sir Ed Davey in Lewes last week, we agreed that it is clear that elections must go ahead and that the only people who benefit from this decision are the Tories squatting in County Hall. Our residents have been taken for a ride and our democracy has been disrespected in the process.

James MacCleary has responded as follows:

“It is disgraceful that Labour continues to disrespect our local democracy. They cancelled our elections last year seemingly without any real long term plan - making a dog’s breakfast out of local government reorganisation ever since.

“Now we are three election cancellations down the line and the Government is U-turning so fast I’m surprised they haven’t taken off. Residents in East Sussex have been taken for a ride and our democracy has been disrespected in the process.

“Last week I was joined in Lewes by Sir Ed Davey alongside local Liberal Democrats and we were clear - our elections must go ahead and the only people who benefit from this decision are the Tories squatting in County Hall.''
