James' Visit to the Conway Asphalt Facility in Newhaven: Working Together and Addressing Concerns

Local residents in Newhaven and surrounding areas have been in touch about the Conway Asphalt facility in Newhaven - for those who do not know it, this facility is a big green shed with a chimney that can be seen from the bridge. Recently, MP James MacCleary visited the facility to take those concerns to Conway's senior management alongside Cllr Lesley Boniface, who has also been working on these issues.

James challenged the facility's management on their record on emissions and compliance with rules on site which has been by no means perfect. James was reassured that the plant has undergone air quality testing, which found no breaches of limits for carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, PM10, PM2.5, nitrogen monoxide, sulphur dioxide, or volatile organic compounds. They have also invested in a new chimney stack and other measures on site to suppress odours.

Our collective pressure is certainly having an impact, and Conway are exploring ways to improve their filtration methods further. Conway are also investing in our local young people by setting up an apprenticeship scheme with East Sussex College.

It is clear that the facility can do better, and we will continue to press them to keep improving their performance as a key local employer in our area. Residents are encouraged to get in contact with James or Cllr Boniface with further concerns and suggestions.
