The Labour government has made the same mistakes as the Conservatives who neglected British farmers. We cannot lose sight of what is at stake; our food security, our natural environment, the rural economy and the heritage of agricultural communities.
Farmers and growers require fair dealing in the grocery supply chain in order to survive and thrive. I am pleased to be joining calls on the Government to bring both regulators together under the GCA, strengthen its powers and resource base, and ensure it is empowered to apply the Principle of Fair Dealing, particularly in respect of production, delivery and payment issues. Alongside this motion I am backing calls to reverse the Family Farm Tax, and for the farming budget to be increased by £1 billion a year.
As a previous worker for the RSPCA and cats Protection I understand how important animal welfare is. The Liberal democrats have strongly supported animal welfare in parliament and will continue to do so.
We believe consumers should have as much information as possible to make informed choices about the products they buy. We are committed to a form of eco-labelling that will empower people to make more informed environmental and financial decisions, and encourage farmers to rear animals more sustainably and ethically.
