Individual freedom and the ECHR

Regarding Britain’s future in the European Convention of Human Rights, The Liberal Democrat plan is for a free society where every person’s rights and liberties are protected and where the contribution of migrants to our society is celebrated.

Our plan is for a world where everybody’s rights are respected and society is fair and diverse; a plan to allow everyone to get on and live as who they are, free from discrimination or state intrusion and where the rule of law is respected.

Those same values are what led to the foundation of the European Convention of Human Rights Human Rights in the wake of the devastation of World War Two. It is one of the most significant and effective international treaties that we should rightly be proud to be part of.

I have also had the privilege of serving on the UK delegation to the Council of Europe, of which the UK is a founding member, that led the way in creating both the Convention and Court. The experience of being on the delegation, has only reinforced my belief in the Convention and the brilliant work the Council does to ensure that the rights and freedoms of all are protected.
