Local Government Reorganisation / Election Cancellation

The consistent delaying of elections is deeply undemocratic. The current administration no longer commands a majority, and it is vital that residents are given the chance to choose their representatives during this important period of local government reorganisation. The mandate of current councillors ended in May last year, and residents deserve their say on the performance of the County Council.

I previously wrote to the Government minister responsible, urging them to reject East Sussex County Council’s request earlier this year and just recently in December asked the minister again if they will commit to holding elections in 2026 in Parliament. The reorganisation process is still on going, I see no reason why resident’s should not be given their say. There is no justification for suspending the democratic process under these circumstances. You can see coverage of my actions on the issue here: James MacCleary slams East Sussex County Council Tories | The Argus.

I firmly believe that holding elections is not a waste of public money but a fundamental aspect of ensuring proper representation and accountability in local government. I will continue to press for a system of governance that reflects the views and interests of the people of Sussex.

I remain concerned that local government reorganisation is a bigger task than the government has realised, which may lead to further delays to elections, which is unthinkable. I am seeking to meet with the Minister and other Sussex MP’s to relay our views. In the meantime, do consider taking part in the consultation on local government reorganisation for our area.
