A 'Pivotal Moment': James MacCleary Urges the Government to protect High Street Businesses
Wed 14 January
James MacCleary has urged ministers to provide immediate relief for struggling pubs, restaurants and shops, during what he describes as a 'pivotal moment'.
In December 2025, James MacCleary raised the issue of struggling local businesses and high streets.
"From the cruel jobs tax to high energy bills, so many small businesses across the Lewes constituency are on their last legs and need support. These businesses are naturally worried sick.''
James has once again in parliament urged ministers to provide clarity, saying that changing business rates could be the ''only chance'' to protect vital high street businesses in our East Sussex towns and villages, notably Seaford, Newhaven and Lewes. The Liberal Democrats are also calling for an emergency cut to VAT for the hospitality sector to boost high streets and cut costs for local families.
Increasing energy bills, staffing costs and the government jobs tax have hospitality businesses in the Lewes constituency fearing closure. James said in parliament, "It is absolutely urgent that ministers provide the clarity these businesses need. This really is their final and only chance."
